When you start to learn Japanese, it's really important to be able to read and write hiragana and katakana. These are the two different "alphabets" used along with kanji to write in Japanese.
When you've had a chance to learn the kana, I strongly recommend that you use the website, "Memrise" to practice your recall. In addition to the website, there is a "Memrise" app, which will work well on smartphones and does not need access to the internet once you've downloaded the courses you want to use.
